The soft shuffle of shoes, a phone that never quite stops ringing, a patient describing symptoms. It’s the sound of the everyday pace of life at Community Health Net (CHN), and the urgent work that keeps it going. Deneen Morris immersed herself in the rhythms of healthcare early on.
“From as early as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a caregiver,” she says. She began her journey in healthcare by attending school to become a nurse’s aide, and early in her career, she worked for seven years at a head-trauma facility. “While the work was incredibly rewarding, I often felt there was more I could do for my patients,” Morris says. A student-nurse instructor urged her to consider nursing school; Deneen admits she hesitated, assessing whether she could be truly successful in nursing. “I had never seen anyone in that role who looked like me,” she relates. She returned to school, became a registered nurse, and widened the circle of care she could offer.
As a registered nurse, Deneen had the privilege of caring for pediatric patients with complex orthopedic conditions, including muscular dystrophy, brittle bone disease, severe cerebral palsy, and spina bifida. She also worked in nursing-home care and with “exceptional physicians” who helped her gain a “deeper understanding of patient care across the lifespan.” Those experiences introduced her to the nurse-practitioner role. “I became inspired by the ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients more independently while continuing to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. This realization motivated me to advance my education and expand my scope of practice,” Morris explains.
Deneen’s connection to Community Health Net is personal and rooted in her upbringing. “Growing up in subsidized housing, I remember my mother taking us to the John F. Kennedy Center for both our annual checkups and sick visits. The care we received there left a lasting impression on me and made me feel that this was something I wanted to be a part of one day,” she says. “In addition, we would go twice a year for dental care at Booker T. Washington Center.” Both centers later became part of Community Health Net, and that only reinforced Deneen’s belief that she was working for a truly great organization.
At CHN, Deneen centers prevention and family care in every visit. “In our setting, we can offer comprehensive services that support not just the individual, but their families as well,” she says. “Preventive care is especially important to me. Health screenings are a vital part of what we do, as they allow us to detect diseases such as heart disease and cancer early. I take this responsibility seriously, ensuring that appropriate screenings and diagnostic tests are ordered so our patients have the best possible outcomes.”
When patients face social or insurance barriers, Deneen moves quickly to coordinate the team. She shares one case: “Recently, I cared for a patient experiencing homelessness who had just lost their insurance coverage. I was able to collaborate with our behavioral health team, homeless outreach staff, and case management to provide immediate support. Together, we helped the patient navigate the complex insurance process, connected them with mental-health services, and assisted in enrolling them in programs for housing support. Most importantly, we ensured they were able to access the diabetic medications they urgently needed.” For Deneen, that work is fundamental: being a true advocate for patients and connecting them with essential resources.
“Morris recalls: ‘From a young age, I have always felt called to care for others, and this profession allows me to fulfill that purpose while making a meaningful impact on the lives of my patients and the community.’” Deneen Morris, CRNP, at Community Health Net, shows up every day to treat disease, to dignify her patients, and to help people beyond the diagnosis.
This is what makes her the quiet fire at the center of care: the steady insistence on dignity, the daily work of prevention, and the stubborn advocacy that steadies lives long after a single visit ends.
