Summer is a great time to be outside – but heat and sun can harm your skin and health if you wait too long to protect yourself. A few quick steps can help you enjoy summer safely.
Protect your skin early and often.
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Put it on 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
Stay ahead of dehydration.
Don’t wait until you feel very thirsty. Sip water throughout the day, especially if you are outside or being active. Eat foods with high water content like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.
Plan around the heat.
Try to be outdoors in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. Take breaks in the shade or indoors. Wear lightweight, loose, light-colored clothing and a hat to stay cooler.
Check on others.
Children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions can get sick from heat faster. Check on neighbors and family. Make sure they have cool spaces and plenty of water.
When you protect your skin and body now, you help prevent problems later, such as sunburn, heat exhaustion, and skin cancer.
